TK and I took the kids into Boston yesterday--the weather was lovely, I had a meeting about shooting an upcoming wedding, and we decided to make the most out of our day in the city. Boston is getting so beautiful--as they complete work on the Big Dig disaster project, the parks they are adding are so very beautiful. Inevitably Eventually (sorry, mom!), there will be a string of parks that circle the city, called the Emerald Necklace...isn't that pretty?? But I digress.
We decided on the Museum of Science for our day out. I remembered there was a huge statue of a T-Rex inside, and TK and I really wanted to go to the lightning show. Anyone who grew up going to the MOS in Boston knows exactly what I am talking about--and the presentation hasn't changed much since I was a kid. And let me just say this: Loud crashing lightning and small toddlers DO NOT MIX WELL. We got through the first teeny little demo alright, but when they cranked it up, and that next big flash and CRACK came, well, I thought our kids were going to explode. This is when sitting RIGHT NEXT to the exit paid off. Back to the dinosaurs....and hanging out in the Apollo space capsule. Seemed much cooler when I was little, but whatever.
We did get to go to the Butterfly Garden, which was significantly less scary, and I really enjoyed it. A small little greenhouse and about a zillion butterflies...they were everywhere. Every so often a huge blue one would flit by Sam's face, and he would recoil like the thing had fangs dripping with the blood of other preschoolers, and he was going to be next. But he settled in, and was pretty intrigued. I took a bunch of pictures, excited to have my macro lens, and as TK and I were just looking at them, he patted me on the head and said, "well, you take good pictures of the kids." So apparently, I am not a wildlife photographer. Which is good, seeing as I am not a big fan of wildlife in general.
One last jaunt through the wings with the dioramas of wildlife and we were set. At each of the displays there was an audio device, Jane had to listen to every one. There were also little boxes where you could sniff...what exactly the smell was, I can not say, as I had NO interest in smelling anything related to the Moose display. Jane was in love with the black bear, which she kept calling the "polar bear" and she did not listen to me when I told her it would eat her if it had the chance. She just though it was "so cute". Oh, Janie.
Just another day in the journey to raising a pair of little nerds.... =)
we had ourselves a little fog-tornado action here.
This was a little window with models of different foods...Sam was explaining to Jane that the stuff in the front is "shoo-shee".
This was a "science in the playground" exhibit. The kids were racing the lights...or something. THey were really just running back and forth like lunatics. Aaaah, science.
(I only wish I knew what she was telling them....)
Not too shabby of a location...looking out of the window, right down the Charles River, Boston on the left, Cambridge on the right. Can't beat that.

I think the wildlife photos are fantastic.

Can't agree with TK on this one. I think the butterfly pix are absolutely lovely. A lightening show? Not in this lifetime!! Loved the post. Sam mesmerized by the dinos and Janie hugging the black bear. Bamp

I agree with Bamp and Bridget, the wild life photos are awesome! Are you trying to tell me that in the near future you don't want to come on an African Safari to take pics with me? I was BANKING on you coming. We could be wedding/portrait/wildlife photographers :)
